Contemporary visual culture occupies the interface between aesthetic, social and political issues and adapts to the continuing development of production and dissemination technologies. The Rencontres Internationales offers a future-oriented way of observing these practices. The program was first presented last November at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Following its stop in Berlin, it goes on show in September 2013 in Madrid.

In the presence of artists and filmmakers from all over the world, the event will offer an international program gathering 115 works from 48 countries, internationally-known artists and filmmakers and young artists and filmmakers presented for the first time in Berlin.

SOME HEADLINES OF THIS YEAR’S RENCONTRES

Artists, visitors and experts have the opportunity to discuss the latest developments and issues in visual culture in a workshop headed by Pedro Costa (29 June), a panel discussion (28 June) and artist talks. In a film program curated by the director and screenplay writer Thomas Arslan, students of the program “Art and Media” at the Universität der Künste Berlin present their work. On Saturday, 29 June, in the context of a Carte Blanche, Pedro Costa screens his 1994 work “Casa de Lava”, shot on the volcanic island of Fogo in Cape Verde (9 PM).

The festival opens on 25 June at 8 p.m. with a keynote by Volker Pantenburg and the screening “New Fiction“. The works by Sandro Aguilar, Clément Cogitore, Crispin Gurholt, Carlos Irijalba, Kaja Leijon, Nicolas Provost and Myriam Yates dissolve the constraints of time and space and blur the boundaries between reality and fiction.
In the live film performance “Strange Matter” featuring piano, Super-8-projector and live-electronics by Michael Busch, a strange matter contaminates the entire planet’s water supply. The duo Jodi challenges visitors to take part in the “ZYX iPhone App Performance”, which examines human behavior under the influence of technology.
To round the evening off, Wilkening & Eleganter Elephanter (Doppelhaushaelfte) invite you to a musical evening on the roof terrace.

On 28 June, Christa Blümlinger and Rainer Bellenbaum take part in a discussion moderated by Frédéric Jaeger and entitled “Image Politics – Display Changes and Collective Experience” on the different contextualizations of artworks and their reception. The open-air screening “Archi Fiction” turns architects and the city into protagonists and enters into a dialogue with the architecture of the HKW.

With works by: Anna Ådahl, Sandro Aguilar, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Rosa Barba, François Bucher, Daya Cahen, Clément Cogitore, Tony Cokes, Pedro Costa, Peter Downsbrough, Redmond Entwistle, Johan Grimonprez, Crispin Gurholt, Marina Landia, John Menick, Christian Merlhiot, Aurelia Mihai, Eleonore de Montesquiou, Charly Nijensohn, Dirk Peuker and Bettina Nürnberg, Sasha Pirker, Katja Pratschke and Gusztáv Hámos, Nada Prlja, Lina Selander, Tejal Shah, Sarah Vanagt, Phillip Warnell, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Myriam Yates, Tobias Zintel and others.
