Human beings have always celebrated certain people whether they be mythological heroes, spiritual leaders, or great innovators. These people may not always have been perfect but their essence was something to which we could aspire- great strength, unshakeable conviction, or the ability to redefine our understanding. Today the celebrated need not have achieved anything!

Of course the modern era isn’t the only time in which people have been famous simply for being famous. But never before has their been the relentless idolatry we see today. In 1968 Andy Warhol pronounced that “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” For too many people 15 minutes seems to run into days, months and even years.

But does celebrity culture play an important role modern society? Perhaps it provides the gossip that we all crave without impinging on the privacy of our neighbours, or maybe celebrities are the modern equivalent of fools of the medieval court?

Come to Cafe Culturel and berate celebrities! Or perhaps tell us why they exist…

Join the discussion at the LCB Depot on Wednesday July 4th from 6.30pm LCB Depot, 31 Rutland Street, Leicester, LE1 1RE
